I am a philosopher of science interested in ecology, evolution and animal behaviour. Currently I am researching  the roles of theory in ecology and conservation. I am also co-authoring a book on the concept of biodiversity. You can read more about me and my recent work.

On a more personal note, my interest in environmental philosophy impacts various aspects of my social and professional life. I have volunteered for various conservation programs including the Orangutan Rehabilitation Program in Kalimantan, Borneo. I am also one of the founders of an environmental education society on Vancouver Island.

My experiences in these and other capacities influence my approach to environmental philosophy in at least two ways. Firstly, I advocate scientific literacy when dealing with environmental issues. Secondly, I am drawn to practical solutions that consider issues of human welfare alongside conservation concerns.

As the instructor for this course, my aim is to introduce you to the complexity of environmental issues and to encouraged you to think independently about them. I have no interest in convincing you of a particular position. Thoughtful disagreement with me, with the Teaching Assistants or the course material is encouraged.
